Following the recent release of the 18th edition wiring regulations, Daniel Gardner Electrical Contractor are delighted to announce our electricians are now 18th Edition qualified.

As a leading electrical contractor in the North East of Fife we understand the importance of keeping up to date with the latest changes in electrical wiring regulations. The electrical regulations are updated and amended periodically with the aim of introducing regulations and requirements that will better safeguard both electricians and the public.

The 18th Edition of the IET wiring regulations were published in July 2018. It included a host of changes including new and revised regulations. Upon release the requirements are can be worked to immediately, however there is a period of grace whereby electrical works to the 18th edition must comply with the changes from January 2019.

Most Significant 18th Edition Changes

  • Arc Fault Detection Devices(AFDDs) are recommended in AC final circuits to reduce the risk of fires caused by arcing between live conductors
  • Cables need to be supported and fixed with fire rated fixings to prevent premature collapse in the event of afire
  • With the exception of FELV and RLV sockets, all AC sockets that are rated up to 32A will require RCD protection,as opposed to just 20A
  • Metal pipes entering a building which have an insulating section at the point of entry will not require to be connected to the protective equipotential bonding
  • Where sensitive or critical equipment can be damaged by voltage surges such as lightning strikes, surge protection devices should be installed at the origin of the supply. A risk assessment should be carried out to assess cost against risk.
  • Energy efficiency class ratings to be introduced for lighting, metering and cabling
